The oldest known form of gambling is the game of poker; there is no record of when exactly the game was first started or from where the game came from. The game was played with special words that were used to connect to the different phrases of the game. Such words were passed on from a player to player. Though poker has a number of variants, the same expressions are used in the game everywhere, and have become a language of its own, recognized popularly as the “poker lingo”. At the time of intense action around the table you would use the term “in action” , this shows that there is “betting” “raising” and “checking” going on. When you bet without adding to the pot, you are “checking”. If the hand pleases you then “betting everything” denotes that you are going to increase the bet. “Up the ante” shows that you are again going to raise the wager. For countering to your opponent’s bet by adding to the pot, you simply have to say “raising”.
A broken player is called “broomcorn uncle” and the money you need to enter a game is known as “buy”. The word “dealer” means the person who deals the cards.
If we take the variant Texas Hold’em, the first deal of two cards in poker lingo is a “preflop”.”Flop” is the second, and then comes “turn” and lastly, “river”. Upon dealing these cards, the community cards are dealt face up on the poker table. A “rainbow” denotes the flop cards of different suits.
When a weak hand beats a strong one, it is a “bad beat”, and this can only happen in poker. If you get annoyed while playing poker, then you are on “tilt”. You can go on tilt after a bad beat.
This is only the basic poker lingo. However, when you begin to participate in the game, you will surely learn the more difficult terms.
